The 1870's to the present
Authors believe that various speeches, pamphlets, books, and other writings have been quite literally epoch-making. Some have aroused people to immediate action. Some have rationalized and justified events after their occurrence. Others have exerted a lasting effect upon the thinking of the majority or of certain minorities. Authors have gathered a small number of items and explored them extensively.
Words alone, of course, have not made American history. But words have accompanied action and have impelled or justified it. At many a point the will of the people has been aroused or crystallized and the decision of policy-makers has been guided by a speech, a pamphlet, or a book.
Such writings, both as interpretations and as motivations, often reveal to the present-day reader the inwardness of past events. To study them is to relive a vital part of the American experience.
