The book is in fact two books in one book! The first four chapters are almost comletely unrelated to the later chapters. I really enjoyed this semi-fictitious narrative of the clash of two cultures. The narrator's occasional philosophizing didn't bother me at all, unlike the work of some other writers who over-do it (Kundera, for example) to nauseating effect....

This book is a thinly veiled fictionalization of expat life in Shiraz, Iran (ca 1960). It has many recognizable similarities to my own experience in Shiraz 12 years later. People I knew in Shiraz said they could recognize some of the characters in Vaughan's book. Rereading the Jokeman in 2013 takes me back 40 years. I learned much about myself and human nature then. I would be surprised to learn that the descriptions of culture clash in this book were not autobiographical. They are so very close to my own.
